AS IS | Jan Lamr

Artist

From Prague, Czechia

Based in Mirošovice, Prague region, Czechia

We talked with fascinating artist Jan Lamr about his art journey, inspiration behind his creations, Czech artists he admires, daily rituals, places, where you can meet him and so much more

A: Please, tell us a bit more about yourself. What brought you to art?

J: I come from an artistic family; my father is a painter, too. Throughout my childhood, I was surrounded by art and color. Naturally, it influenced me.

A: What inspires you the most?

J: Following my move from the centre of Prague to the countryside, my work is now also influenced by a number of natural motives. Despite the primary impulse remaining spontaneous, my artworks are now subconsciously permeated with nature. When taking a look at the finished work in an effort to analyze it, it is as clear as day. Sometimes, it is a swarm of birds, other times pine needles in the woods, a churned-up water surface, a bubbling brook, wrinkled and cracked ground or tree bark.

A: Do you have any specific rituals while working (creating)?

J: Good music! Sometimes I paint while dancing .

A: What would you recommend to someone new to art (an artist or just an admirer), what to begin with?

J: Just be yourself. Inspiration must come spontaneously from within. It doesn't matter what technique you use, but don't overthink it. Let it flow.

A: Your Top 3 adjectives related to art?

J: Eye-catching. Smart. Original.

A: Your favorite Czech artists?

A: What piece of art do you think embodies the Czech national spirit and culture? Why?

J: The work of the Czech writer Hašek. It captures our nation's nature. And the work of David Černý from fine arts. He also manages to capture our mentality.

A: The perfect phrase to start any conversation about art is: ..?

J: If among artists: "What new are you working on?"

A: Where can we meet you?

J: In my studio in Mirošovice u Prahy. From May 2022 in the Kroupa Gallery in Prague and at other exhibitions.

A: Please, share your favorite quote (not necessarily related to art)

J: The most beautiful thing is the one not created by man.

Thank you!
